Anam Cara Theatre Company is Asheville’s avant garde, ensemble-driven theatre company, uniting community and promoting social justice.
Anam Cara produces experimental theatre that empowers artists, promotes equality, challenges thinking and transforms community. We provide a safe space for artists and audiences to take risks, grow, and collaborate.
Accordion Time Machine is an experimental theatre ensemble drawing from the influence of the NeoFuturists of NYC and Chicago. The aesthetic offers a non-illusory theatre experience where there is no suspension of disbelief and the
audience/performer conventions of traditional theatre are held loosely. The pieces are raw and personal, at times very dramatic, at times hilarious and absurd. The group employs a collaborative process to arrive at their performance pieces, incorporating improvisation, audience interaction and the element of surprise. Accordion Time Machine performs every other month at Toy Boat Community Art Space. Each performance is centered around a theme. The resulting avant garde,non-illusory theatrical jaunt is an experience; a discovery for performers and audience members alike.

Barbed Wire Suit
Directed by Rachel Thomas-Levy
Inspired by the works of Flannery O’Connor and Jean Toomer, Barbed Wire Suit is an ensemble-created play in which each ensemble member strives to taste, smell, touch, and embody their own Southern experience. This singular play asks probing social questions about the stagnancy of Southern culture in regards to both class and race. Come explore with us a world that is cluttered with dusty chairs, trinkets, and minds suspended in time.
