Opening July 17, with a fund-raising gala at the Tryon Fine Arts Center, Tryon Summer Youth Theater’s “Matilda the Musical” is high energy, packed full of rousing songs and great choreography, and has its quota of villains and good guys—promising that you’ll leave the theater smiling.
Based on the 1988 children’s novel by Roald Dahl, it was adapted for the stage by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Originally staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, it won numerous awards, went on to thrill West End and Broadway audiences, and then toured the world. Tryon’s production is directed by Chris Tinkler, with musical direction by Pam McNeil, and choreography by Missy Fincher.
A collaboration between Tryon Little Theater and Tryon Fine Arts Center, the Summer Youth Production has been a favorite for many years, spawning a slew of talented young actors—many of whom have gone on to bigger and greater things in the theater world.
Thanks to local donors, sponsors and the Polk County Community Foundation, ticket prices are kept low so that all area fans can afford to enjoy the show. Gala tickets include beer and wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, and all proceeds will help fund next year’s show.
“Matilda the Musical” opens July 17, with the gala premier starting at 6:00 pm, and the show following at 7:30 pm. Performances July 18-20, start at 7:30 pm, with the Sunday matinee curtain at 3:00 pm. Tickets and further information can be found on line at www.tltinfo.org, or by calling 828-859-2466.
