LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Get ready for a chilly weekend as snow and freezing temperatures make their way back to Kentucky. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued, starting at 1 a.m. Sunday and lasting until 7 p.m. Here’s what to expect in the coming days.

Saturday: Rainy Start with Cooling Temperatures

  • Morning: Saturday will begin with temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. These temperatures will remain steady throughout the day.
  • Rain: Expect light to moderate rainfall in most areas, with a few heavy pockets of rain possible.
  • Evening: As temperatures start to drop overnight, the rain may turn to ice, increasing the risk of slippery roads and surfaces.

Overnight Transition: Snow and Wintry Mix

As the day progresses into the late evening hours, snow and a wintry mix will take over. Some areas in northern Kentucky may see snowflakes as early as the evening.

  • Snow Accumulation:
    • Most of eastern Kentucky could see 1 to 5 inches of snow by the time the storm wraps up.
    • Areas with heavier snowfalls are expected to be in eastern parts of the state.

Sunday: Blowing Snow and Arctic Air

  • Morning: Snow will continue into early Sunday afternoon, but strong wind gusts could create areas of blowing snow, reducing visibility.
  • Temperature Drop: By Sunday night, temperatures will plummet, with lows nearing zero or even single digits in some regions.

Brutally Cold Start to the Week

The Arctic blast will stick around into next week:

  • Monday Morning: Wind chills will make it feel even colder, with morning temperatures around zero or single digits.
  • Daytime Highs: Expect temperatures to stay in the teens through Wednesday.
  • Wind Chills: Bitterly cold wind chills will make it feel much colder than the actual temperature.
