LAREDO, Tex. – The Laredo Health Department has asked people to stay alert and protect themselves from diseases spread by mosquitoes.
This warning came after the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) confirmed the first locally acquired case of dengue virus in Cameron County this year.
Cameron County is located in the Rio Grande Valley, an area where mosquitoes are active for longer periods due to mild winters and warm weather.
Health officials explained that these conditions allow mosquitoes to thrive and spread illnesses like dengue. To stay safe, the department suggests taking simple steps:
- Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs.
- Apply mosquito repellent regularly.
- Empty any standing water from containers every week.
- Keep your yard neat by cutting tall grass.
- Make sure your windows and door screens are in good condition and stay closed.
By following these precautions, you can reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses and keep your family safe.
