South Carolina Gas Prices Drop Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season

As Thanksgiving came to a close, South Carolina saw a notable decline in gas prices, with a 2.5-cent drop per gallon from the previous week. Prices across the state are now 6.8 cents cheaper than a month ago and 18.4 cents lower compared to last year. According to GasBuddy’s survey of over 3,000 stations in the state, the cheapest gas in South Carolina was priced at $2.39 per gallon, while the most expensive was $3.39.

This drop in prices comes as millions of Americans traveled for the holiday, but while some regions like the Great Lakes saw prices rise, most areas of the country, including South Carolina, experienced stable or slightly lower gas prices. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, indicated that national gas prices are near their lowest levels since 2021. This trend is expected to continue through the holiday shopping season, with many stations offering prices under $2.99 per gallon.

De Haan also pointed out that, while OPEC+ discussions later in the week could affect oil production and potentially lower oil prices, the national average for gas remained steady at $3.00 per gallon. Diesel prices, however, have risen for the first time in several weeks, seeing an increase of 1.1 cents to average $3.514 per gallon.

What This Means for Consumers

The ongoing price fluctuations suggest that gas prices may continue to dip slightly in the coming weeks. For South Carolinians, this offers a small but meaningful relief as they head into the holiday season, both for travel and daily commuting. With gas prices stabilizing and expected to remain affordable for the next few weeks, consumers can plan for a more predictable holiday spending experience.
