91-Year-Old Woman Passes Away After Crash on Charleston Hwy

Cayce, S.C. — A tragic crash on Charleston Highway in Cayce has left one person dead after a three-car collision on Wednesday night.

The accident occurred on the 2400 block of Charleston Highway, near the Food Lion store. According to the Lexington County Coroner, 91-year-old Joyce P. Backman was involved in the crash and later died from her injuries.

Backman was driving when her vehicle was struck in a two-car collision. After the initial crash, she got out of her car to check on the damage. While she was outside her vehicle, a third car, a Chevy Express, struck her.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and took both drivers involved in the two-car crash to Prisma Health Richland Hospital. Sadly, Backman passed away from her injuries a short time later. The other driver in the two-car crash was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Chevy Express was unharmed.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. However, the incident has raised concerns about safety on Charleston Highway, especially in areas with high traffic like the 2400 block.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher confirmed Backman’s identity and expressed her condolences to the victim’s family. She also emphasized the importance of driving with caution and safety, especially at night when visibility can be reduced.

The crash occurred in a busy area, and the scene remained active for several hours as officials worked to clear the wreckage and investigate what led to the tragic accident.

This incident highlights the dangers of stopping on highways after accidents. Authorities urge drivers to remain inside their vehicles and call for help instead of leaving their cars on busy roads.
