28-Year-Old Killed in Mobile I-65 Shooting; Suspect Charged with Murder

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that took place earlier this month on Interstate 65 in Mobile. Derrell Maye was taken into custody on Monday afternoon and booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail. He faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, trafficking synthetic marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges stem from a deadly shooting on December 8, 2024, on the southbound lanes of I-65 near Airport Boulevard. The incident left 28-year-old Monterio Harris dead after he was shot while riding in a vehicle.

According to Mobile police, Harris was a passenger in a vehicle when another car approached and began firing. The suspect’s vehicle struck Harris’ vehicle several times. Despite being seriously wounded, Harris was rushed by a private vehicle to a local hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Following the shooting, police launched an investigation, which led them to identify Derrell Maye as a suspect. Officers learned that Maye was allegedly involved in the attack, and they arrested him Monday afternoon near the intersection of Old Shell Road and Cody Road. At this time, further details surrounding Maye’s arrest and the motive for the shooting have not been made public.

The shooting caused significant disruptions on I-65 as police closed a portion of the highway for the initial investigation. Law enforcement worked through the night to gather evidence and secure the scene.

Maye is facing a series of serious charges related to the shooting. In addition to the murder charge, he faces charges of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, which is a felony offense. He is also charged with trafficking synthetic marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, though it remains unclear how these drug charges relate to the shooting incident.

The murder of Monterio Harris has left the Mobile community shaken. As of now, his family and friends are mourning the loss of the 28-year-old, whose life was tragically cut short. Harris’ death has raised concerns about gun violence in the area and highlighted the ongoing challenges of addressing shootings on busy roadways.

Maye is currently being held in the Mobile County Metro Jail as he awaits further legal proceedings. His bail has not been set, and he is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing soon.

The Mobile Police Department has asked anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
