Every year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day gives us a moment to reflect on the incredible legacy of a man who changed the course of history. Dr. King’s life was a powerful example of courage, sacrifice, and relentless dedication to justice.

He was a leader who held a mirror to society, exposing the deep flaws of inequality while inspiring us with the hope of what could be achieved. His journey wasn’t easy—he faced imprisonment, violence, and constant threats. Despite these challenges, Dr. King never wavered. He believed, as he famously said, that “The time is always right to do what is right.”

Lessons of Courage and Perseverance

This lesson is one I carry with me, having first learned it from my father and his law partners, Julius Chambers and James Ferguson. They co-founded North Carolina’s first integrated law firm in the 1960s and were trailblazers in the fight for equality. Even when their office was firebombed in 1971, they stood firm. Their courage and determination continue to inspire me today.

Here in North Carolina, we have significant challenges to overcome. Progress is never automatic; as Dr. King wrote in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, “Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability.” Real change requires effort, commitment, and hard work.

Addressing Housing Inequality

One of the pressing issues we face is housing inequality. As Dr. King noted in 1966, “Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God’s children.” Unfortunately, these doors remain closed for many in our state. While three-fourths of white families in North Carolina own their homes, less than half of Black families have the same opportunity.

Homeownership is more than a roof over your head—it’s a cornerstone of stability and a means to build generational wealth. Expanding access to affordable housing and increasing homeownership opportunities must be a priority. Everyone deserves a stable home and a place to grow.

Improving Healthcare Access

Dr. King also spoke of the injustices in healthcare, saying, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane.” North Carolina’s healthcare system still falls short for many. Black mothers face higher mortality rates, and far too many families struggle with limited insurance coverage and crushing medical debt.

While Medicaid expansion is a step in the right direction, more must be done. Making healthcare affordable, reducing insurance costs, and lessening the burden of medical debt should be top priorities to ensure a healthier future for everyone.

Building an Inclusive Economy

Economic growth must benefit everyone. Dr. King’s final days were spent in Memphis, fighting for fair wages for workers. Today, that fight continues. North Carolina has not raised its minimum wage in 16 years, and it’s time for a change.

We need to raise the minimum wage and cut taxes for working families to help them keep more of what they earn. Additionally, creating more good-paying jobs and supporting small businesses across the state will strengthen our communities. From small towns to big cities, every corner of North Carolina should have opportunities for prosperity.

Moving Forward Together

Dr. King’s call to action resonates just as strongly today as it did decades ago: “Let us rise up with a greater readiness and determination.” Together, we can build a future rooted in freedom, justice, and opportunity for all.

By addressing these challenges head-on—whether in housing, healthcare, or economic opportunity—we can honor Dr. King’s legacy and create a brighter, fairer future for everyone.
