SSI Recipients in NJ: Expect a Payment Boost Starting January 31

More than 162,000 New Jersey residents who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to low income, blindness, or disability will receive their first 2025 payments this week—with a slight increase in funds.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has applied a 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) to SSI benefits. While this is the smallest increase since 2021, it still means extra money in recipients’ pockets.

When Will SSI Payments Arrive?

The first 2025 SSI payments will be deposited on January 31, 2025—a day earlier than usual. This is because February 1 falls on a weekend, and Social Security payments are typically sent out early in such cases rather than delayed.

How Much Will Your SSI Check Increase?

The exact amount you receive depends on your income, disability type, and household size. However, here’s a general idea of what to expect:

  • A person currently receiving $1,920 per month can expect a $48 increase.
  • The maximum monthly SSI benefit for 2025 is now:
    • $967 for an individual (up from $943 in 2024)
    • $1,450 for a couple (up from $1,415 in 2024)
  • On average, recipients will see about $50 more per month.

What If You Don’t Receive Your SSI Payment on Time?

If your January 31 payment does not arrive, the SSA advises waiting three business days before reaching out to them. Since weekends are not considered working days, you should wait until at least February 5 before contacting the agency.

How to Check Your Benefits?

To stay updated on your SSI payments and benefits, you can:

  • Create a “my Social Security” account through the official Social Security Administration website.
  • Refer to the Social Security fact sheet, which provides details about the latest changes in 2025.

With this slight increase in SSI payments, recipients will have a little extra financial support as they start the new year.
