A man from Sumner, Mississippi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison without the possibility of parole for trafficking stolen firearms. This sentence follows his guilty plea to charges of trafficking firearms that were stolen, according to Madison and Rankin Counties District Attorney, Bubba Bramlett.

Kyler Seamster’s Conviction

The convicted man, 29-year-old Kyler Seamster, will serve his time in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. As a non-violent habitual offender, he will serve his sentence without the chance for early release. Under Mississippi law, a person is charged with trafficking stolen firearms if they are found with two or more firearms that are known to be stolen.

The Incident

The case began on April 13, 2024, when officers from the Gluckstadt Police Department stopped a car for having improper equipment. During the stop, officers realized the car matched the description of a vehicle that had been linked to recent auto burglaries in the Bear Creek subdivision.

Kyler Seamster, the driver and only person in the car, was found with marijuana roaches in the ashtray, and there was a strong smell of marijuana in the vehicle. A search revealed three stolen firearms, which had been taken during recent auto burglaries in the area. The police also found clothing and a backpack tied to the burglaries, as shown in surveillance footage from the neighborhood.

A Career Criminal

Seamster had a criminal history, with prior convictions for house burglary and grand larceny. This made him a habitual offender, meaning he is ineligible for parole under Mississippi law.

District Attorney Bubba Bramlett took the opportunity to remind the public about the importance of keeping valuables, particularly firearms, out of vehicles. He explained that firearms are often the primary target for thieves who go from driveway to driveway, breaking into cars in search of guns. These firearms are then sold on the black market, used in violent crimes, or exchanged for other illegal items.
