Truckloads of salt are being readied in anticipation of deteriorating road conditions as a winter storm hits Massachusetts this Thursday. The storm, which brings a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, is expected to make driving conditions hazardous throughout the day. As a result, many schools in the area have already announced closures.
At Eastern Salt in Chelsea, workers were hard at work overnight, loading trucks with salt in preparation for the storm. The salt pile, which weighs between 150,000 and 200,000 tons, will be used to treat roads across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island to prevent accidents and make driving safer.
Eastern Salt manager, Cornelius Martin, shared that, “It’s been very busy. A lot of small events where they don’t plow, so it’s more feasible to salt.” He further explained that crews are working diligently to ensure all customers have enough salt on hand to maintain safe driving conditions.
In case the salt supply runs out, additional reserves are stored on a cargo ship stationed nearby, ensuring an ongoing supply throughout the storm.
Meteorologist Shiri Spear from Boston 25 has issued a WEATHER ALERT, warning the public about the storm’s severity. The National Weather Service has also released a winter weather advisory for nearly all of Massachusetts.
Spear emphasized the importance of caution on the roads, especially during the evening commute: “I would say through the evening commute, we’ve got to be real careful on the roads,” she advised.
