Farm to School Roadshow: Connecting Local Farmers with Schools to Serve Fresh Produce

This effort is the result of a partnership between the University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Department of Education. Together, they are offering a statewide series of workshops aimed at helping farmers navigate the process of selling to schools while also providing school food service buyers with the tools needed to successfully incorporate locally grown produce into their meal programs.

Workshops Focus on Training Farmers and School Buyers

The workshops offer valuable training for vegetable producers, with a focus on the following key areas:

  • Crop Planning: Farmers will learn how to develop a crop plan tailored specifically to meet the needs of school buyers.
  • Meeting Customer Demands: Guidance on how to meet the wholesale demands of schools, including considerations for volume, quality, and consistency.
  • Food Safety Practices: Ensuring that produce is handled properly, including washing and storing techniques to maintain freshness and safety.
  • Sustainable Pest Control: Practical advice on how to manage pests without compromising sustainability.

In addition to these topics, school buyers will have the opportunity to connect with farmers, discuss procurement processes, and share best practices for integrating Minnesota-grown products into their menus.

Why It Matters

According to Natalie Hoidal, Extension Educator at UMN Vegetable Production, it’s crucial to help farmers understand how to sell to wholesale customers like schools. “These workshops will equip Minnesota’s vegetable farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the specific needs of schools, ensuring that students have access to fresh, local produce,” she said.

Jayme Anderson from the Minnesota Department of Education emphasized the importance of these partnerships. “Schools and early care providers are actively seeking local food sources, and these trainings will improve access to healthy, Minnesota-grown products for students across the state,” she explained.

How to Register

Interested participants can register for these workshops online. To ensure that both farmers and school buyers have the best experience possible, early registration is encouraged.
