NEWARK, NJ — Newark police were involved in a dramatic shootout with a murder suspect Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of 4th Avenue and North 9th Avenue. The confrontation occurred when officers, already in the area, heard gunfire and approached to make an arrest.
As police moved in, shots were exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement, but fortunately, no one was injured during the exchange. The situation was quickly contained, and the suspect was taken into custody.
However, when officers arrived at the scene of the gunfire, they discovered a victim of an earlier shooting who had tragically died. “The officers did a tremendous job in responding to the situation, and we are grateful that no further injuries occurred during the shootout,” said Newark Police Department spokesperson, Detective Maria Collins. “However, the loss of life is always a tragedy, and we are committed to finding out what led to this incident.”
The shootout and the murder investigation are now under investigation by the Newark Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. Law enforcement is working diligently to gather details and piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
